Sending info from your phone to your computer is so yesterday! What’s happening now is more devices talking to more things you plug in. Connectedness is now so think about how that new product you are designing can talk to the new watch phone I might buy!
Here’s some stuff already happening
Belkin’s WeMo
The electronics and mobile accessories company now makes a whole series of products that let’s you control anything you can plug in using your mobile device. Think you left the coffee pot running? Want to turn on the air-con before you get home from vacation?

Nest
This is pretty simply cool – it’s a thermostat that learns as you adjust it. It’s as easy as putting a light fixture and you can control it from your mobile device to save energy.

Burg
This Dutch designed watch phone is already making calls and SMS/MMS but watch out for its next version which will have email, GPS and payments.
AllJoyn
This is Qualcomm‘s open source project that helps stuff communicate. It provides a universal software framework and core set of system services that enable proximal peer-to-peer (P2P) connectivity across platforms. What?!?! It allows companies to easily build programmes that let two devices talk to each other when close together – no matter what device or platform. As long as the message is simple so the next version of mobile OS doesn’t bust them.
Some uses developers have created or are working on:
- TV tell my tablet you want to take a picture and send it to TV
- Tell your house you’re on vacation so every device should go into sleep mode
- Water heater tell my phone there’s a leak
- Mobile device send music to this speaker system
